Ubisoft Faces Class Action Lawsuit Over Alleged Unauthorized Data Sharing with Meta

Ubisoft is currently facing a legal challenge concerning the handling of user information. The company is involved in a class action lawsuit focusing on the sharing of personal data from users of the Ubisoft Store and Ubisoft+ with Meta. According to reports, the lawsuit alleges that individuals purchasing games or subscribing to Ubisoft+ via the Ubisoft Store are not adequately informed that their personally identifiable information is being transmitted to Meta through a tracking tool known as Pixel.

Pixel is a code implemented on websites to analyze the success of advertising campaigns. It monitors user behavior on the site, including the types of games they buy or search for, and sends this data to Meta. The complaint asserts that this practice violates the Video Privacy Protection Act, established in 1988 to safeguard the purchase history of video rental customers.

This law was updated in 2013 to permit data sharing with user approval. However, the lawsuit contends that Ubisoft does not seek this consent: the document states that the company fails to inform users on its website that their personally identifiable information would be collected by the Meta tracking Pixel and subsequently shared. The class action aims to secure financial restitution for all impacted users as well as a judicial directive requiring Ubisoft to either eliminate Pixel from its site or obtain explicit consent from users prior to any data sharing.
