WhatsApp Test-Runs Enhanced Security via Email-Based User Verification
- 2023-11-03
WhatsApp, globally acknowledged as one of the most widely used messaging apps, has an obligation to ensure user privacy. While every message sent on this Meta-acquired messaging platform is secure via encryption, the app continues to work on introducing fortifying security measures. Since August this year, WhatsApp's team has been test-driving a user verification system via emails. Whisperings suggest that the security feature is entering broader beta testing on WhatsApp’s latest beta variant for Android, implying an upcoming release on the stable channel.
This expansion comes shortly after WhatsApp incorporated its passkey feature for all its users, which was initially teased on the beta channel for several weeks. As per details from WABetaInfo, the developing email verification feature can be found in the Settings > Account area of the messaging app. It has been rolled out for several beta testers using version 2.23.24.10. Screenshots shared indicate a semantic setup process that includes an individual's email field. The incorporated text confirms the absolute privacy of the email addresses and explains how the verification system assists in user account access. Once the email is confirmed, it gets set up with the account. Failing this would trigger a prompt guiding the user to complete the setup process, along with a verification button initiating a resend for the verification email.
Contrary to assumptions, email verification is an extra security feature rather than the principal safeguard. However, ideally, most app users should choose to link their email addresses with their WhatsApp accounts to guard against potential losses or thefts.
The email verification feature's wider availability should roll out in the upcoming weeks, though it's currently available solely for a limited beta tester population. As an alternative to phone number verification, this feature serves as a great backup plan for users.
Recent additions to WhatsApp beta have been intriguing, with one such feature being the YouTube-inspired tap-to-seek video navigation for the built-in media player of the chat application. Given the app's demand for a major overhaul, this feature has potential value for millions of WhatsApp users.
In recent developments, WhatsApp beta users were introduced to the 'Alternate profile' to aid users in distinguishing between work and personal profiles, which arrived after multi-account support was extended to all Android users following an extensive beta phase.
