Twitter Offers Users an Opt-Out Tool for Gambling Ads

As the advertising industry strives to make ads more targeted and tailored to users’ needs, Twitter is following the lead of other social platforms by introducing an opt-out tool for gambling ads. The Ad Preferences section of the app offers users the ability to choose whether or not they want to receive gambling-related ads.

Twitter’s new tool allows users to make an informed decision when it comes to the ads they’re being served. Users can opt out of receiving gambling-related ads by selecting the “Gambling” category in the Ad Preferences section. This is particularly useful for those who have a sensitivity to or have a negative opinion of gambling ads.

Twitter has taken a similar approach to the way other social media companies have dealt with the topic. For example, Meta has offered an Ad Preferences tool since 2020, which enables users to opt out of ads related to alcohol, parenting, and pets, as well as social issues, elections, or politics.

In both cases, however, ads may still appear as the platforms are likely to continue serving general ads that don’t fit into the categories. This is done to ensure that advertisers’ content still reaches interested users while also providing users with some control over what type of ads they’re seeing.

Overall, the new opt-out tool is a good move by Twitter. It shows that the platform is making an effort to give users more control over their experience while also helping advertisers reach the right audiences. At the same time, this tool is likely to have a beneficial impact on ad performance. Whether users take advantage of the tool remains to be seen, but Twitter’s attempt to improve its ad targeting is commendable.
