Redfall’s Perseverance: Arkane Studio’s Major Update Push Towards Revival
- 2023-10-10
Despite its stumbling initiation and dwindling player base on Steam, Arkane Studio's Redfall isn't all doom and gloom. On Friday, Arkane breathed new life into the game with a considerable update dealing with various gripes and challenges, including stability and performance issues, bugs, and Quality of Life deficiencies. Moreover, exciting new combat encounters and player actions have been injected into the mix!
A significant portion of this update is dedicated to enhancing Redfall’s performance with fine-tuning across diverse hardware configurations. While my experience with Redfall was relatively smooth in terms of graphics and frame rate, compared to titles like Jedi Survivor, it was far from perfect, making these improvements a much-appreciated change.
The real game changer lies within Redfall's combat alterations. Among these is the introduction of stealth takedowns using "staked weapons." A peculiar omission from the start, this addition enhances the vampire-hunting atmosphere. Furthermore, with amplified open-world enemies populating the game and an overhaul to mission encounter balancing, the game should now offer more challenging and captivating encounters.
However, while this new update addresses several issues, it's crucial to understand that Redfall needs a much deeper renovation than what Cyberpunk 2077 received with its acclaimed 2.0 update. Financial incentives for such an overhaul are uncertain – unlike Cyberpunk, which had sold a whopping 13 million copies within a month of launch despite its rough state.
While we do see commendable efforts being put into Redfall, the game might need more than just a few patches to really make the cut. For now, it seems best for Arkane Austin to garner insights and take its lessons from Redfall to be carried over to future titles. In the meantime, players can glimpse the full patch notes for this update on Steam and experience the changes for themselves. Despite all odds, it seems Redfall is striving for improvement, and only time will tell how successful these endeavors will be.
