Best Narrative in 2023: Alan Wake 2, The Invincible, Baldur's Gate 3
- 2024-01-02
We recall the games of 2023, which pleased us with the story and its presentation. We voted and chose the video games with the best narrative, in our opinion (there will be no spoilers in the article)
Third place — The Invincible
The creators of The Invincible (2023) had one significant advantage, which the games below lack — the adventure is based on the book. More precisely, on Stanislav Lem's famous novel "The Invincible". The developers had an important task — not to drop the honor of the original, preserving its ideas and doing without ... contradictions. As a result, the team presented a slowly developing but fascinating story and perfectly recreated a fantastic atmosphere!
Second place — Alan Wake 2
Alan Wake 2 couldn't help but be on the list of games with the best storytelling. The only question was exactly where the new Remedy would be located.
The horror story is about a writer stuck in a dark monastery, and FBI agents trying to get to the truth is based on text and recordings. But the narrative in Alan Wake 2 is much broader: it includes spectacular scenes with a soundtrack. The developers reveal the story, influencing the players to the maximum!
First place — Baldur's Gate 3
But we give the first place in the nomination to Baldur's Gate III. It is a role-playing game in which the narrative becomes a separate and essential character. In particular, we should thank actress Amelia Tyler, who stunningly voiced the narrator, for this.
But the main thing in the narrative of Baldur's Gate 3 is its non—linearity, which gives extraordinary freedom, at least during the first passage. Yes, over time, you realize that sometimes the choice here can be illusory, but this is a topic for another discussion. If we return to the narrative, we also note that the developers actively use visuals and music to immerse themselves in what is happening. In particular, one of the most memorable moments in Baldur's Gate 3 was the battle in the House of Hope.
Bottom Line
In conclusion, engaging and dynamic storytelling is crucial to any video game. Based on the games released in 2023, Baldur's Gate 3 stole the show with its exceptional narrative brilliance that became a distinct character in itself, closely followed by Alan Wake 2's horror tale and the literary adaptation, The Invincible. These video games demonstrated how immersive and captivating a gaming experience can be when paired with a formidable narrative. However, narrating a story isn't just about the script; it's a harmony between visual elements, music, and voice-overs that collectively create the perfect environment for gamers, making narrative an integral part of video gaming.
