Pokémon Trading Card Game Pocket Surges to Over $120 Million in Revenue Within Three Weeks of Launch
- 2024-11-21
The recent launch of the free-to-play Pokémon Trading Card Game Pocket has generated substantial financial success, garnering impressive figures shortly after its release. Within just three weeks, it is projected that the game has surpassed the $120 million mark, a remarkable achievement for a digital card game.
The figures reported by AppMagic indicate that the game reached $100 million in sales in just 17 days, eventually exceeding $120.8 million. Although Pokémon TCG Pocket is free to play, it offers optional purchases such as booster packs, cosmetics, and a monthly subscription that provides an additional pack each day.
The game's debut was met with immediate popularity, with earnings of approximately $3 million a day noted after the first four days of availability. Player spending has since surged, now averaging around $6.4 million daily.
In terms of weekly sales, Pokémon TCG Pocket is estimated to have generated $35.8 million in its initial week and an even more impressive $48.5 million in the following week. By the fifth day of the third week, the game tallied $37.2 million in revenue.
This growth could stem from an increasing player base and the strategic design of the game, which initially rewards players with an abundance of packs, cards, and collectibles, gradually tapering off those rewards over time.
The development team, Creatures Inc., has fostered ongoing engagement by introducing a variety of events tailored to different gaming styles. One event provided players with free items known as Wonder Picks, while others catered to competitive players through engaging battle formats. One notable event, the Lapras ex Drop Event, challenged players to conquer water decks for a chance to win the popular Pokémon. The player versus player event also played homage to Pokémon culture by incorporating badge rewards.
On the collecting side, players have expressed excitement over mythical god packs that yield five alternate art cards at once. In addition, there’s a secret Mew card hidden within the game, which is relatively easy to obtain.
In terms of battles, classic favorites like Charizard ex and Mewtwo ex continue to dominate the competitive scene, with Pikachu ex hot on their heels. Creatures Inc. has also teased the introduction of new cards set for release in December and plans for trading capabilities in 2025.
