Netflix Shutters Ambitious Gaming Division Led by Industry Veterans

Recent developments indicate that Netflix has closed its AAA gaming division, despite having gathered an impressive lineup of seasoned developers from notable franchises like God of War and Halo over recent years.

According to a fresh report from Game File, the studio, referred to as Team Blue, was working on ambitious and high-budget projects across various platforms. The team included high-profile figures such as Chacko Sonny, who served as the executive producer for Overwatch, and Joseph Staten, known for directing Halo 3: ODST at Bungie and overseeing creative efforts for Halo Infinite at 343 Industries.

In addition to Sonny and Staten, the studio featured other industry veterans. Rafael Grassetti, who played a crucial role as the art director for God of War Ragnarok, was part of the team, along with Jerry Edsall, who brought his expertise from working as the lead programmer on Gears of War 5 and as a lead campaign engineer on Gears of War 4. Additionally, Gavin Irby, the design director, held significant positions, including campaign design lead at Bungie for Destiny 2 and ecology designer for Overwatch 2 at Blizzard.

Game File notes that Netflix has not disclosed the number of individuals impacted by the closure of Team Blue. However, a representative did confirm that Sonny, Staten, and Grassetti are no longer with the company, leaving unclear whether their departures were voluntary or due to layoffs. Interestingly, Edsall's LinkedIn profile indicates that he is now listed as "ex-Netflix."

Ironically, the creator of Resident Evil expressed confidence that the studio he helped establish would remain secure as long as they produced high-quality games similar to Hi-Fi Rush, yet Microsoft proceeded to shut it down regardless.
