Marvel and Magic: The Gathering Unite for Epic Secret Lair Drops in 2024
- 2024-10-22
Exciting news has emerged regarding the collaboration between Magic: The Gathering and Marvel, which was initially announced in 2023. During the New York Comic Con, significant details of this partnership were unveiled, revealing the upcoming release of five themed Secret Lair drops beginning November 4, 2024.
Each drop will showcase a unique Legendary creature inspired by one of five iconic Marvel characters: Black Panther, Storm, Iron Man, Wolverine, and Captain America. The abilities of these creatures will reflect the thematic essence of each character. For example, the Iron Man creature will generate Treasure tokens and allow for the sacrifice of an artifact to search for another artifact based on the mana value of the sacrificed card, providing a powerful gameplay advantage.
The Secret Lair Drops will also feature four reprints corresponding to the highlighted character, with pricing set at $39.99 for non-foil and $49.99 for foil options. Detailed descriptions for the drops include:
- Secret Lair x Marvel’s Captain America
- Secret Lair x Marvel’s Iron Man
- Secret Lair x Marvel’s Wolverine
- Secret Lair x Marvel’s Storm
- Secret Lair x Marvel’s Black Panther
Another announcement from Wizards of the Coast included a Tentpole Booster set centered around Spider-Man. While specific cards and format legality details have not been disclosed, the set has been likened to the Lord of the Rings set released in June 2023, which was the first Universes Beyond set recognized in the competitive Modern format. Whether Marvel's Spider-Man will follow the same path remains uncertain.
The complete Magic: The Gathering set inspired by Spider-Man is scheduled to launch in 2025, although it is yet to be confirmed if this will include prebuilt Commander decks.
